Competitions

Firefighting is a demanding activity, requiring peak physical and mental fitness. To stay sharp and ready for anything, firefighters across New Zealand – including members of the Devonport Volunteer Fire Brigade – participate in challenging competitions that test their skills and push them to their limits. These events are not only a chance to showcase individual strength and expertise, but also to foster camaraderie and teamwork among brigades.

Two of the most prominent competitions are the Firefighter Combat Challenge, the Firefighter Sky Tower Challenge and the Drivers Challenge.

We're incredibly proud of the Devonport Volunteer Fire Brigade members who take on these challenges, demonstrating their dedication to excellence and their unwavering spirit.

Combat Challenge

This intense competition tests firefighters' speed, strength, and endurance in a series of tasks that simulate real-life firefighting scenarios. Imagine racing against the clock while wearing full firefighting gear, including breathing apparatus! Competitors must:

Advance a fire hose while carrying a heavy weight.
Hoist a fire hose up a tower.
Forcefully open a door with a sledgehammer.
Drag a weighted dummy to safety.

The Firefighter Combat Challenge is a true test of individual skill and determination, pushing competitors to their physical and mental limits.

Firefighter Sky Tower Challenge

This iconic event sees firefighters race up the 1,103 stairs of Auckland's Sky Tower, again in full gear. It's a lung-busting climb that raises funds for Leukaemia & Blood Cancer New Zealand, and a powerful demonstration of firefighters' commitment to helping others, both on and off the fireground.

Driver Challenge

his competition focuses on the essential skills required to safely and effectively operate fire trucks. Precision and expertise are key as drivers navigate obstacle courses, testing their ability to:

Maneuver tight spaces.
Accurately judge distances.
Operate pumps and aerial devices.

The Firefighter Driver Challenge highlights the vital role that skilled driving plays in emergency response.
